It was New Years Eve and the Water's Edge Bar was still open for business. An older, weathered faced man stood behind the bar, cleaning out a glass and watching the few occupants. The bar was fairly empty. Two old men sat at the bar while three younger guys stood around the dartboard. Besides the man behind the bar the only other employee was a young woman who was walking around collecting empty bottles and glasses.
Lacey was bending down to grab the last unclaimed glass when she felt the hand of one of the young men colliding with her tiny ass. Without much thought she quickly turned around and backhanded the drunk guy. He stumbled back with one hand pressed against the side of his face. "What the hell!?" he spat at her. Lacey turned from him to grab the glass and walked past him without a glance. "Look, don't touch." she told him sternly as she set the glass on the bar in front of Sean, the bartender and owner.

Jim watched the semiviolent scene unfold from the bar with little interest. It wasn't like something like this doesn't happen every day... unfortunately. By now it was pretty commonplace for a fella to come in, get bent and mess with the waitresses and bartendresses. It was a shame to see it, really. "One large lauger over here," he said, waving a lazy hand to the waitress.

Lacey sent a wave back at him to let him know that she heard him. She made her way behind the bar and filled the man's order without delay. "Here ya go." she told him as she placed the drink infront of him. "Anything else you want?" she asked polietly.

Jim grabbed his beer. "Naw, I'm good. Thanks." He took a swig from the mug. "I know that gentleman over there probably isn't man enough to appologise to you, so I will for him." Jim looked directly at the waitress. "I'm sorry he treated you like that."

Lacey gave a smile smile and light shrug. "Thanks, it's not that big a deal though, I'm used to it. It usually only takes one hit then they get the idea that they shouldn't do it again." she said like it was no big deal.

Jim looked at her a little sideways. "Ain't that a bit demoralizing?" he said over a beer. "Women ain't toys, they're people, and should be treated as such." He watched closely for her reaction.

Lacey shrugged again. "Yeah it is and of course being treated like a person should happen but, for me, when stuff like that happens it's not a big deal. If I expected to be treated with respect I would be working someplace else."

Jim scoffed and took a swig. "Naw, ain't that a shabby attitude. Come now, you deserve more than that, yeh?"

"I don't have a shabby attitude! It's a realistic one." she told him. Sean slid her a cup and a rag so she could talk and be productive at the same time. Lacey started cleaning without a second thought.

"Oh, feeling protective now, are we? You don't need to defend your job to me." Jim set his now empty mug down gingerly.

"Do you want another one?" Lacey asked, gestering to his mug. "And I'm not being protective or defensive.... that much."

"Naw, I'm done." Jim wiped his mouth with a handkerchief and pushed his mug towards her so it'd be easier to reach. "Thank you, you've been a pleasure." He pulled a card from his breast pocket. "If things get too rowdy in here, or somethin' strange happens, give this number a ring, will ya?"

Lacey pulled the mug behind the bar so she could wash it then took the card. She gave a poliete and friendly smile, glancing at the card then slipping it into her half-apron pocket so she wouldn't forget it. "I will, you have a nice night."

"I will. Thank you again," he said courteously. Jim slid off the barstool and walked to the door, confiscating a stolen wallet from a petty thief caught unawares and slid it back into its rightful owner's pocket before leaving. "Good night!" he waved from the door before disappearing into the night.

FF- A Few Weeks
Sean, the owner, waved goodbye to Lacey as he rushed out the door to the hospital to deal with a family emergency. Lacey was alone but Sean hadn't been concerned, it looked like it'd be a slow night and Lacey was a big girl, she could handle herself. Well, apparently not.
When the biker creeps from down the street that always watched Lacey when she left the bar came in, the young woman knew there would be trouble. Trouble came and the bruise on Lacey's cheek came along with it. Slipping into the backroom 'to grab more beer', Lacey pulled the card she'd been given out of her pocket and dialed the number on the old telephone, tapping her foot impatiently as she listened to the ringing.
