Padraic had barely lifted his gaze when the intruder barged in. His only response was to make himself much smaller and harder to grab, but he wasn't overly concerned. Just to rub it in, he kept his gaze on the girl and didn't glance at all at the ranting lunatic. Pansy court fairy? Oh how blissful is ignorance. He mentally snorted in amusement.

I realized I was ignoring Padriac. Something you never do is turn your back on a fairy, especially a court fairy. I turned back to him and vowed never to take my eyes off of him again while he was in my room.

Padraic gave a little wave when he saw he had the girl's attention once more. "I'm not sure it's entirely safe for me to leave." he told her. "As I have done nothing to harm you, you should not do anything that could cause harm to me." Padraic's face was blank but his eyes were focused.

"Lies!" I growled. I glanced at the girl. "Look, he's gonna try to capture you! Take you away to his queen for some petty promotion!" I fairly spat the words queen and promotion as I said them. They tasted sour.

Padraic raised an eyebrow but continued to keep his eyes on the girl. "As this fair lady knows, I cannot tell a lie, a restriction in my blood." He spoke calmly, not at all angry or worried. "I have spoken of my intent already."

"Oh really? Then why are you here, aside from 'gathering information,' hmmm?"

"Well, I heard about the disrupted hunt and was quite curious about it. It's not often that an event like that occurs." he replied smoothly. Padraic could play this game until the end of time, it was what he did best. It did get tedious however, when he was the only one answering questions instead of giving them.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "I see." I knew he'd out-think me. For all my power and skill, he still surpassed me in intellect. "Fine. You win... for now. But I won't forget this." I turned to the girl. "And when you wake up beside his queen with a half-million needles and tubes in you, don't come crying to me for help." I walked to the window. "Oh, and don't forget to tell him to fix this window," I said, pointing at Padriac as I climbed through the window sill and into the night.

I shook my head, trying to clear it. Besides the jangling of Padriac's presence, the word "lies" decided it wanted to bounce around inside my skull. "Would you please leave, Padriac? And fix the window on the way out? I have enough trouble focusing in school without lack of sleep to further confound my brain." I could focus, this I knew, just not on the things the teachers wanted me to. Brownies follow me like the curse they are and get me blamed for all the accidents, since I'm the only one who can see what they're doing.

Padraic flew over to the window, or at least where it used to be, but did not leave just yet. "I'll leave if you'd like my dear. I'll even fix the window as a favor, though I'm not the one who destroyed, if you promise to owe me a favor in return." Standard fairy relations, it wasn't a paticularly bizzare request.

"What is it?" I didn't want to be beholden to a fairy. If nothing else, that was bad news. They could ask for anything as a boon and I would not be able to get out of it.

Padraic shurgged slightly. "The favor I ask of you could be for anything at anytime. I'll have you know, a fairy always accepts a favor that is equal to the one they gave. Anything less or more and they're insulted so you have no reason to fear."

So fixing a window was equal to what for the Fey? I had no clue. "I think I'd rather get in trouble than be indebted to a fairy."

Padraic nodded his head in acceptance. "That's your choice then. Have a lovely sleep." he told her with a grin and zipped out of the room before she could put in another word. Padraic paid a lot of attention to his surroundings as he flew away, not sure if the other creature was still in the area.

I would have closed the window...if there had been any window to close. I wish my connection to the Fey yeilded more than trouble for me, like the power to fix something like that. Maybe I could ask Grandpa to fix it before mom got up. He'd want to know how it happened and I was safer telling him about my...visitors than I would be telling my mother. At least with Grandpa, I wouldn't come out of the lecture with a month long grounding. I decided that I didn't really like Padriac. There was something about him, something in his eyes that just seemed menacing. Try as I might, I lay awake the rest of the night, my peaceful rest out the window with my two midnight visitors. Finally, I just got up and went downstairs around 4 in the morning. "Grandpa," I asked quietly, "do you think you could fix my window? It was broken last night." "And why was that, Leila-lily?" he prodded gently, using his nickname for me. I opened my mouth, but couldn't tell him about the fairy. "A badger person broke through my window because he was mad that I interupted the Wild Hunt last night." "You did what?!" "Shh! I don't want mom to..." "Look here, Leila. Your mother is my daughter and she still has to do what I say, just as you have to do what she says. You disrupted the Wild Hunt?" I shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah." "Leila-lily, where have you been hiding all this power?" I changed the subject as I always did when the subject of magical power came up. "I really need to get breakfast and get to school. I'm going to walk this morning." "Okay then. I get to your window before your mom wakes up." On the way to school, the brownies peeked out of the bushes as I passed and the pixies giggled. It was going to be a long day.
