Maisie hadn't been able to rouse Tyler immediately. He must have hit his head or something, so instead she had peeled off her wet over-shirt and placed it under his head before looking around at the beach they were on. The sand was pale, and the water crystal blue. On her left and right large, rocky cliffs rose up and turned the area where the beach and crashed airplane were into an alcove, with only one entrance out to open sea. About twenty feet from where she sat beside Tyler's unconscious body was a tree line that began with thick foliage and led into a dark, jungle-like area.
Maisie had no want to venture into it without someone to watch her back, because she'd heard of islands having wild boars and other ferocious animals on it. She could only hope they'd stay in the forest, and she and Tyler would be safe out here.
Ten minutes into her worrying over Tyler, both Mathew and David were approaching from the plane crash. The fires were smoldering now, and Maisie did her best not to think about the people at the front of the plane, who were most likely dead by now. "Guys!" Maisie called, waving her arm above her head. Between them was the slumped form of Mr. Kissinger. The man was unconscious, and once the boys trudged up onto the wet sand, they laid him out even farther up from the beach from Tyler.
"Is he alright?" David asked, brown eyes concerned as he stared down at Tyler. David didn't look much like a smart kid at first - he looked more like a football player. He was all muscle, with wide shoulders and a barrel-like chest. He was a good foot taller than Maisie, with dark hair and dark eyes. But he was smart, maybe not as quick as Maisie or as argumentative as Tyler, but he was a good asset to the team.
"Um, I think so." Maisie muttered, one hand resting on Tyler's shoulder. "It's getting dark." She sighed, glancing up at the evening sky.
"Me and Matt can go get wood to start a fire. Mr. Kissinger will know what to do when he wakes up." David paused, glancing back at the demolished plane wreck. "We didn't see Ryan anywhere, but hopefully he'll show up before night."
Mathew was David's opposite - lanky, thin, and lean with sheer blonde hair and dull, gray-blue eyes. He wore wire-rimmed glasses, even though he had contacts, and fit the whole "debate team member" character very well. He was soft spoken and almost shy, except when he was around David, and Maisie had yet to really have a good conversation with him about anything other than the team. When he glanced over at them from his spot by Mr. Kissinger, he looked a bit dazed. He had a gash at his hairline that was crusted with dried blood, but he looked alright.
"Okay." Maisie sighed, "I'll keep an eye out for Ryan."
Ryan didn't show up by the time they had a fire going, and Maisie was so preoccupied with making the fire that she'd not been paying Tyler much attention. When she looked over to finally check on him, she saw that the tide had lapped it's way up to his body. "Crap!" Maisie grunted, scurrying to her feet and rushing over to him. She leaned over him in order to grab him by the shoulders and pull him farther up the beach, but instead she realized he was awake.
"Tyler!" She grinned, happy to see him at least conscious. "Hey, big boy, you're awake! I was worried." She dropped down on her knees beside him, the water lapping at her calves as she looked him over. "Do you need help up?"
