Tyler always enjoyed going to new places. After all it was why he joined the Debate team in the first place. The other of course was for the arguing. Oh the joy he felt when he argued with another person. Knowing that you were pitting your intelligence against theirs and all to sway them to your side of the table. There was of course also to just prove them wrong on some subjects.
His team had just won Nationals and was now going overseas to compete against another Nations Team. He wasn't sure who it was they were facing. Of course he never did. He liked to have an open opinion on the people he was facing. Not knowing anything about them til just a day or two before the event was perfect for him. Besides Maisie always took care of knowing who their opponents were so that they could research what they were weak on. Unless they had the same strengths you had. Then they just researched harder on their strengths.
Now that he thought about it. He hadn't checked the time in at least an hour. When he looked he saw that it was thirty minutes til he was suppose to meet with Maisie. And it was across town at the airport. Luckily he had packed the night before and it was only a carry-on anyways. Problem was he was going to have to take the back roads there. Let alone the fact that he was going to have to speed. Maybe if he was lucky she was running late to. Though that may be unlikely. She always tried to be there early or on time to make sure she didn't let anyone down. At least that was how he saw it.
He realized he was day dreaming again and grabbed his keys as he ran to his car.

Maisie sighed as she checked her watch again, glancing around the airport. The askance looks she got for her scar didn't bother her, and she was amazingly good at ignoring people anyhow. She had her blonde hair pulled up in a tight bun, wearing a pair of jeans and a flowy white shirt. Sitting atop her head were a pair of sunglasses, which she tucked over her nose as she glanced around for Tyler. She wasn't worried that he'd yet to show up, so instead she sat down in one of the uncomfortable airport seats outside her gate and flipped open her laptop so she could catch up on so e research on their opposing team. The opposing team was made up of two girls and three boys, unlike Maisie's team which consisted of four boys and Maisie. Most would pinpoint Maisie as the weak link, considering she was the only girl, but she had a quick tongue and a high amount of intelligence. On top of this, she was also the most prepared out of her group - not that they were any less skilled than her, just that she was the only one of the group who started checking out the challenging team the minute she was informed on who that team would be. The team they were going up against weren't stellar or amazing in any remarkable way - they'd gone to Nationals, so obviously they weren't to be underestimated, but Maisie didn't see anything on them that would be worrisome when it came time to fight the battle of words. With a sigh, Maisie closed her laptop and glanced around. She could see two of her teammates sitting closer to the windows, David and Mathew. They were watching the airplanes, and neither of them even tried to notice their female teammate. Not that Maisie minded, because she knew it wasn't like they were snubbing her. She got along well with most of the guys on the team, but her and Tyler seemed to click the most. Not that even she and he were best friends or anything, just that she preferred his presence and conversation over the rest of her teammates. Maisie put aside her technology and went to get a cup of cappuccino that was only slightly better than coffee. Maisie was never one for bitter drinks, probably why she also wasn't much of a wild partier either. She sipped the hot, sweet liquid and let her eyes roam the crowds, never straying far from her bags. She considered calling Tyler to see where he was, but they still had at least fifteen minutes before their flight would be called, so she wouldn't start worrying immediately. (I added onto it! )

Tyler went through the lines as fast he could. There was only about 8 minutes to get to the gate on time. At least that was what it said on the board before he checked it. Ryan was ahead of him. 'Guess he is running late too.' Tyler thought to himself. He finished his security check quickly and walked as fast as he could towards the gate.
Ryan almost looked like he was running. David and Mathew were probably already there. They always hung out with each and seemed to be playing games when ever they were not studying. Of course, he didn't know much about Ryan either. He kept to himself and always seemed to respond to the oddest things during the Debates. Then again, without those random tidbits during the Debates. The team might have lost a few debates.
They were coming up on the gate and Ryan hadn't noticed Tyler behind him yet. But he could tell Ryan noticed Maisie even before Tyler had. He looked at Maisie. He liked her a lot. She was the greatest friend he had. He waved to her as he picked up his speed into an almost run himself, passing Ryan. He didn't see his face at all.

Maisie had downed half her drink before she spotted both Ryan and Tyler, and instead of continuing to drink it she threw it away and met Tyler half-way. "Hey, cutting it close, aren't you?" She said, teasing him and scolding all at the same time. Her blue eyes swung up to the board that told you what was going on with your flight, and it told her they had just minutes before it arrived. Turning back to Tyler, Maisie smiled lightly. "Are you excited? I've never been overseas."
Before anyone else had a chance to speak, however, the woman standing by their flight's gate grabbed her microphone and started telling everyone that the plane had arrived. Unfortunately for the debaters, they weren't all sitting right next to each other - they had to be paired off together, and scattered among economy. Fortunately, Maisie and Tyler had been paired off whenever the tickets were bought a few weeks ago, so it wouldn't be a bad flight for her anyways.
"That's us." Maisie said, as if it needed to be said - Tyler probably already knew it was their flight. "Come on." Maisie went and quickly stuffed her laptop into it's case, swinging the strap up onto her shoulder and grabbing her messenger bag, which were her only carry-ons.
She went back to Tyler before leading the way to the gate, where they would have their tickets checked before being swept down the hall to the loading entrance to the plane.

Tyler didn't know how to reply as she jokingly scolded him. He was confused. "I'm always late or cutting it close Maisie. you know that." He glanced around. He couldn't tell if Ryan looked upset or not. "Besides. I made on time didn't I?" He asked in a sarcastic confident voice. He lifted his chin up and acted like the hero of the moment.
He double checked everything in his bag as he walked down the hallway. He was also wondering how he always was paired with Maisie. Not that he ever complained. He was just curious if the teacher had ever noticed it. Now that he thought about it. He realized he hadn't seen the teacher for the debate team and that he wasn't listening to Maisie reply. He started looking up and down the line for the Teacher.

Maisie found their seats and glanced over at Tyler, "Who are you looking for?" She asked, pushing her things into the overhead cabin while making sure there was enough room for both of their things. It didn't take her long to notice that the teacher was the only one who hadn't shown up, and she glanced around quickly, too. She didn't spot him for a moment before a head of graying brown hair popped into the airplane's entrance and after a few moments, the man that started the debate team was revealed.
Mr. Kissinger was an older man, but he had intelligent green eyes and was always really nice to the team members. He spotted Maisie staring at him and gave her a little wave before seating himself in a seat a few rows from the entrance. Maisie smiled and sat down in her seat, relaxing now that the entire team was here.

Tyler relaxed also as he saw him take his seat next to Ryan. Mr. Kissinger was the closest thing he had to a father. He had been kind to him ever since he was in middle school. No one really realized that he lived next door to Tyler and that he had asked Tyler to join the Debate team first. But that didn't click inside Tyler's head. It just was.
"Mr. Kissinger of course." Tyler replied to Maisie. He then pulled a book about surviving out in the wilderness with limited supplies. He was getting ready to go camping again and he figured he would try to live off the land this time around. He was already near the end of it. But he wanted to reread it so that he could better memorize a few of the other things.
"You ever going to go camping with me Maisie?" He asked. She always seemed busy when he asked. Of course she also never let him drive after the first he drove her home. Her mom had said to be home at a certain time and they were running late so he had sped. But he didn't see any connection between that and him going camping. He usually met people there or went by himself.

Maisie glanced at his book for a moment before looking up at him, "Maybe someday." She shrugged. It wasn't that she didn't like being around him, but she wasn't much for the outdoors. It had been a thing her and her father did, before the car accident. Now she couldn't take two steps into the woods behind her house without thinking about those late-night conversations they'd have, the marshmallows they'd roast.
It was all very touchy-feely for her and her dad, and when he had left she didn't do much of anything that may remind her of him. No road trips, no camping, no scary stories. She had enough to remind her of him without seeking out those memories.
Her train of thought was interrupted when a flight attendant was telling them, over the speakers, that they could unhook their seat belts. She added something about a drink cart or something or other coming around shortly, but Maisie was neither thirsty nor willing to unhook herself from the relative safety of her seat. She'd flown before, but it still made her nervous to be that high up.
She turned her attention back to Tyler, "Who are you going camping with this time?" She asked.

"No one. I wanted to go with limited supplies and only a few tools. You know. Try to survive off the land type of thing." He said with a grin. He lifted his book up to indicate it. "I've had a sudden urge to look it up and learn about it. We both know I learn best by actually going out and doing it." He said as he opened it up to where he had left off. "I am going to read for a little bit and then take a nap. Will you wake me me up when were almost there so we can discuss our opponents?" He asked her.
The fasten seat belt sign came back on at that moment. Though to be honest he hadn't even noticed it going off. The flight attendants checked everyone while pointedly hurrying to there seats themselves. The Captain came on over the loud speaker about then. "Ladies and Gentlemen, We're about to hit some turbulence. Nothing too much. We're just gonna do our best to alter our course out of it. So no one worry and enjoy yourself."
Tyler looked at Maisie. "That fact that he told us not to worry, actually makes me worry more. It is human nature to try and comfort others when they are worried themselves. Where are we right now anyways? It feels as if we just left."

Maisie had been about to tell Tyler that she would wake him up when needed, when the light came on and the flight attendants seemed to appear out of nowhere. As one rushed by, she paused to lean in and make sure both Maisie - who was seated near the window - and Tyler were buckled before hurrying off with her coworkers to sit in her own, special seat.
Maisie let her gaze roam over the woman's face, catching the tightening of the skin around her smile and realizing that she was obviously trying to look calm and collected, like nothing was wrong, when inside she was probably horribly worried. It was most likely in everyone's training to not worry passengers - a panicked plane of people is like a startled herd of cattle. Maisie swallowed, nervous already, as she made sure herself that her seat belt was tight.
"Well, I guess if they aren't abandoning plane just yet, or turning us around, the turbulence can't honestly be that bad." She muttered in response to Tyler, trying to reassure him as much as she was herself. She could already feel the fear trickling up her throat, a panic seizing her throat in a tight grip. If there was anything that got Maisie, usually calm and under control, freaked out it was the idea of crashing - cars, planes, whatever the case.
Clearing her throat, Maisie glanced over at Tyler, finally realizing he'd asked her a question. She looked out the window, no longer seeing the city but the wide expanse of ocean that was just miles from the city airport. They were over the Pacific, now. "I'm guessing we've been flying at least half an hour, maybe an hour or more. I'm not sure, I wasn't really paying attention." With a wry, tight, and definitely worried smile she tried to crack a joke. "At least if we crash, we won't be hitting a building or something." She didn't laugh though, because it wasn't funny - instead they'd be hitting water, probably at a fast speed, which could crumple metal and break bones just as easily as rock and steel could.
No wonder people who jumped off bridges rarely survived.
With a sigh, Maisie turned away from the window and closed her eyes for a few seconds, trying to calm herself down. It might have been just her, but she felt as if she could already feel the first tremors - like small ripples in a calm body of water - of turbulence. "How about we change the subject? Umm...how about talking about our competitors? It's a team of two girls and three boys." She said, trying to remember what she'd read about them on her laptop. "Obviously they're good, since they made it to Nationals, but I think I remember seeing that they're not so good when stuff gets heated. Like, if we hit hard with really good facts on the topic, they'll probably break under the pressure."
Maisie was rambling slightly, not really focused on the words as much as trying to get her mind out of the idea of turbulence, crashing, and breaking bones. It was as if, in reply to the thought of crashing, her scar was a scalding streak down the side of her face. A reminder that she'd already been through one crash, and could probably make it through any others. Hopefully, anyways.

Tyler put His jacket on while Maisie was talking to him. She was rambling and he knew she was worried. She must had seen something he hadn't. He put his book on the inside pocket and closed it so it wouldn't fall out. He turned to tell Maisie everything was going to be O.K. But as he turned the plane began to shake uncontrollably. One of the luggage containers opened up and spilled everything out. Tyler was watching when the one across from them opened up. He covered Maisie with himself and felt some of the heavier bags hit his back.
Before he could even look around to see if anything else was happening in the shaky environment, the just started dropping out of the sky. If it wasn't for the seat belts Maisie and He would both have been thrown against the roof of the plane. He thought he heard the engines trying to restart.
That's when he tried to do the math of how much time they might have before impact. In the that second he felt the plane jerk back up and throw Maisie and him back into their seats. Tyler looked over and saw someone in the middle of the aisle. It was a flight attendant who had tried to close some of the luggage compartments. She wasn't moving.
He stopped holding Maisie has the plane slowly settled down and the turbulence went away. He leaned over to check on the Flight Attendants pulse. She was alive. He looked up and gazed around at the other passengers to see if anyone else was hurt. He couldn't see if anyone was. They were all shaken up. Some were openly crying. He looked back at Maisie to see if she was O.K.

Maisie's monologue cut off the moment the plane began to shake, her heart dropping into her stomach as she reached out to snatch one of Tyler's hands and squeeze it in a tight hold. Her eyes snapped closed and she tried to focus on breathing.
A scream lodged in her throat as they plummeted, her ears catching the sounds of panic from the passengers around her, the luggage falling. She was hardly aware of anything else but the sounds around her, and the loud thud of her own heartbeat in her ears. The scream was almost on her lips when they straightened out, and though she felt faint, she forced her eyes open and her hand to release Tyler's from the death grip she had on it.
She watched him check on the flight attendant in the aisle, Maisie's chest tightened with pure panic. She'd gone pale, and her calm and in control facade had completely faded from her expression. Her eyes were widened, but she was already working through the steps for calming down that she'd learned in therapy. The first was to come back to reality - they weren't crashing, no one was mortally hurt, and everything was fine for the moment. The next was to breathe, which she wasn't doing so well - she was in a minor state of hyperventilation.
"I'm okay." She said breathlessly, her gaze drifting around the other seats round them, her eyes finding the other members of their group and making sure they were alright. "I'm fine." She said, more softly and more to herself. Her hands were now gripping the arm rests, her breathing evening out ever so slowly.
"Do you think it's over?" She finally asked, but she needn't ask - there was another burst of shaking, and Maisie instantly latched her hand onto Tyler's. She gritted her teeth as the plane evened out, the tremors fading. When was the pilot going to announce they were a-okay? Maisie was terrified, but she was a master at concealing her feelings every since her father's death. "I'm never getting on a plane again." Maisie muttered, her voice pitched so that only Tyler could hear.

Tyler smiled down at her with that last comment. "How are you gonna get back home then?" He asked. He knew no matter how much fear may try to break you. To never let it break you. Stay calm and think. If fear ever controlled you, then you had to act on instinct. He never trusted instinct. You always perceived a threat where there was no threat. Of course that was him. He knew full well plenty of others survived off instinct.
He looked out the window again. He couldn't see anything. The clouds had engulfed the plane. Some of the people had gotten out of their seats and were helping the stewardess back to her fold out seat. He was watching everyone buckle back up when a wrenching noise came from behind him. He looked up just in time to see a line shear through the cabins roof. It was hell then. The cabin quickly depressurized and Tyler could feel the plane plummet out of the sky. He grabbed onto Maisie as hard as he could. It was the first time fear had suddenly beaten him. He was scared and holding onto Maisie felt like holding onto a Light in Darkness.
He couldn't hear the screams of people over the sound of the wind. He couldn't see either as he left his eyes closed. He didn't want to see what was about to happen. He could feel the plane try to tug itself back up and away from the ground rushing towards it. But it seemed to only cause more damage to it. He thought he heard the sound of metal being ripped off the side of the plane. The wing perhaps? He thought to himself. It seemed to chaotic for him to even tell what was going on anymore. He just clutched more tightly. He felt more then heard the ground meet the plane. Everything for him went black shortly afterwards.

Maisie was about to snap at him when the tearing sound erupted from behind them. The scream about to rip from her throat came back full force, but at that same moment the wind whipped it away and left her breathless as her arms snaked around Tyler's torso and clung to him for dear life.
The impact jarred her bones and made her teeth clack together, and for a good minute or two she went between unconscious and conscious. It was when she felt the cool lap of water against her side that she realized she'd been knocked out by something and was now waking up to her half of the plane being ripped away and filled with water from the ocean they'd crashed into.
Sucking in a gasp, she reached down and unbuckled herself as the water started to rise up her legs. She tried to glance around for David, Mathew, Ryan, and their teacher but she was spurred to action instead when the water - freezing and sharp - hit her back. She reached out and unbuckled Tyler, dragging him out of the plane and into the water.
It shocked her to feel sand just out of reach as she dipped from the waves. Her head swiveled as she held onto Tyler's unconscious body, looking for the right way to go - a beach was only about thirty feet away, the front end of the plane a jumble of ripped metal and fire. Maisie managed to get herself and Tyler far enough from the wreckage, in case it exploded or something, before letting him settle into the wet sand.
Maisie assessed herself for wounds, feeling a lump on the back of her head from whatever had hit her and knocked her out. There was a gash on the side of her leg from something, but she couldn't remember getting it. Soon enough, sharks would probably be attracted to the crash. Maisie wanted to swim back out and find the others, but instead she turned to Tyler and gently nudged his shoulder. "Hey, wake up. Are you hurt anywhere?"

Tyler opened his eyes. But he didn't feel as if he was himself, completely. When he looked around it was dark. He felt small and weak. He looked up to a spinning object with other things hanging off it. He couldn't describe them. He started realizing that he was in a cage or something. And that is when he noticed the very large shadowed man sitting in a corner watching him. It wasn't til a moment later that he realized a woman was standing behind him in the shadows talking to him. He couldn't understand more then a few words. He heard his name a few times. The man replied to something the woman had said. Almost instantly Tyler felt himself calming down from the fear building up in him. Then he heard his mothers name. The woman smiled down at that man and patted his shoulder.
She left from standing behind him and walked over to Tyler. He could see clearly now that it was his mother. He got more confused and started crying. Wait. Why am I crying? I am not a baby.... The thought hit himself. He realized it must be a dream he was in. But he couldn't wake himself up. He couldn't even control his dream. It was like a memory stuck on reply. His mom smiled down at him as he picked up. He stopped crying and stared at her. Her red hair fell into his face and he tried to grab it and play with it. Her green eyes held Joy and happiness as she watched him try and try to grab her hair. No matter how hard he tried. He couldn't get a hold of her hair.
Suddenly the shadowed man was looking over her shoulder at him. His eyes glowed yellow as he looked down at him. Tyler tried reaching up to him. Forgetting about his mothers hair completely. The man smiled down at him. Tyler suddenly felt cold. It was as if he was being dunked in freezing water. He started screaming and crying has hard as he could. The dream began to dissipate around him. The yellow eyes the very last thing he saw before a new image appeared. A woman with dirty blonde hair was smiling at him. Her blue eyes joyful at seeing him. The smattering of freckles as apparent as the scar on her face. He felt like he should know her. Something about her waving him over and then running away. He broke into a run to chase after her. Only to suddenly fall into the middle of nothingness. He finally hit ground after what felt forever. He his back so hard he groaned as the air left him.
That's when he felt something cold splashing onto his face. It kept lapping up against him. He opened his eyes to a clear starry night. All the pain he felt in his dreams hit him at once and he groaned loudly. The water lapping up at his face as the tide came in made him try to crawl away. Only to be met with more pain as his body screamed at him from all thrashing that had been done to him. He lied there waiting for his body to relax enough that he could move. He also just hoped that he was outside of tides reach.
