Darreth's smile left his face at her words. He tried not to feel sorry for her, but couldn't seem to help it. "Don't you have family anywhere?"

Her full lips twitched again- yet another unwanted subject. "Technically yes," she answered slowly. "I mean, I'd call them biological contributors more than anything else- my dad died when I was little and my mom changed drastically after that..." she drifted off, thinking. "But, yeah, so I'm off on my own now and it's better that way, really..." She wasn't looking at him now, her smile gone as she thought of the past.

"I'm sorry." Darreth said soflty. "I didn't mean to bring up unwanted memories; t's just that...well, it's not very safe being on your own in the streets."

"I know, I know, I hear that a lot..." she mumbled and changed the subject. "What are you ordering?" She looked back up at him, disregarding his concern quickly. "I'm going to get a burger- I haven't had one of those in a long time..."

Darreth smiled at her words. "I think I'll have one also. Maybe with a chocolate shake."

"Coffee for me. It's weird to go with a burger, but that's okay," she said and glanced outside at the pouring rain and thundering clouds. Laela looked back at him. "I'm-" The waitress came to take their orders. Once they were taken, she started again. "I'm Laela. Who're you?"

Darreth glanced down at the table before turning to her once again. "Darreth. I'm Darreth." It was strange, to tell someone his name; to become intimate with anyone. His existance was a solitary one and had been so for many years.

"Darreth," she repeated, smiling. Her blue eyes sparkled at the name. "THat's a pretty name- I like it. A lot of guys I meat have plain-joe names..." she rambled. Laela perked up again as her coffee was brought to her- and she asked about refills and such, and then went to drink the hot and thick beverage.

Darreth cringed at the sight. "I don't see how you drink that stuff. It's far too bitter for my taste." He smilled to himself as he glanced down at his shake. "I guess I have a sweet tooth." Which was incrediably odd; considering his diet consisted of mainly raw meat. Yeah, better keep that to himself.

"It's nasty, but it keeps you pretty warm," she explained, not looking up at him because she didn't want him to feel bad for her again. "I miss drinking shakes, but I drink coffee in cold weather."

Darreth stared at her in silence. It was horrible what she had to go through. "How long have you been on the streets?"

"I told you already- just a few years is all," she answered. A 'few' was open to any length. A 'couple' said two even if the person who said it meant more than two. Laela had been on the streets for, in another week, 4 years. She had ran away on her birthday.

"And no one came looking for you?" Darreth asked, unable to believe that someone would let they're adolesant child live on the streets and not search for them.

"I don't know," she answered. "Probably- but if a kid doesn't wanna get found, they don't get found." Laela's mother and step father lived on the other side of the country. In one stupid waste of money, she'd bought train tickets to the farthest place she could afford, and then hiked everywhere from there. She'd stay in a town every so often, getting money so she could buy food or clothing or, at some point, a sleeping bag.

"Have you never considered going back?"
