"Here, let me help you." he said, taking a step towards her. He hated to think of her fragile body struggling to complete the phsyical labor her job entailed

Lilly shooed him off. "I'm fine," she assured him, having done worse in her life than this sort of manual labor. She turned the vacuum on and got to it, going slowly as she vacuumed to do the best job she could.

Sighing to himself, he leaned back against the wall and watched her silently, wondering to himself why she seemed to take so much pride in her job. It was commendable, of course, but not something he could understand.

It took Lilly another two hours to do a job that had desired appearance, even though she normally spent four-five hours cleaning and such so it was very cleanly. She went to the woman's locker room, showered and changed, then headed back up. She had some dark-blue skinny jeans on that were held up with a black belt that looked old and ready to break, and wore a green jacket over whatever shirt she was wearing. She had a small, broken backpack on her back that held her empty wallet, deodorent, house keys, and bus card. She looked at him, wondering if she was supposed to announce she was ready to go.

Understanding she was finished for the day, he led the way to the elevator without saying a word. In the elevator, he decided he'd better attempt some small talk since he had invited her to dinner. "So, how'd you come to be a janitor?" he asked, as he led the way out to the car and opened the door for her.

Lilly hesitated at the car thing- no one ever opened doors for her unless she was just about to grab it so she could follow in. It made her feel odd. "The Liberation found the open space here and set me up with the job a month ago," she answered as she buckled in and set her bag in her lap.

"You were a slave once?" he asked, surprised. He'd never expected her to tell him this, although he had expected her past to be pretty colorful.

She nodded. "Up until...a year ago I was. THen I was in the hospital for many months, followed by therapy, and hten finally the found me a home and job." Lilly looked up at him. "How'd you know what the Liberation was?"

"Why did you have to go to the hospital and then phsyical therapy?" he asked, dreading the answer that she might give him, but needing to know nevertheless.

"Hospital because when they found me I was..." she paused to dig a paper out of her bag that listed her previous health problems. "I was m-al-nou-rished, arm frac-ture, three frac-tures in fingers and toes, severe lac-er-ations on body, bruising, an...ap-en-di-cit-is, and minor case of...pnu-mon-ia," she read off. "I didn't have physical therapy, but they said I had to visit with a psych...psych...psych-doctor-person to ensure I was okay in my head. I have to take," she dug around her bag again and pulled out some anti-depressants. "These every six hours." Lilly looked up at him as she put her things back in the bag. "I still have to go there on the weekends for therapy, but they said I seem to be doing okay."

Realizing the girl sitting next to him had been through hell and back again, it made sense to him now why she took so much pride in her job. "I'm sorry.....I'm glad that you were liberated..." he said, wanting to ask what exactly had happened to her, but not wanting to put her into an uncomfortbale situation.

Lilly smiled at him gently. "You haven't done anything bad to me, but thank you for...your..." She struggled for the right word for a moment. "Sympathy." She smiled again. "This will be my first time ever having real Italian. What's good?"

"Personally, I'm a big fan of the chicken Alfredo, but I"ll let you order several things off of the menu and decide for yourself what you like. " Pulling up into the resteraunts parking lot, he got out of the car and opened to door for Lilly, leading her into the resteraunt and choosing a small booth to sit in. A blonde, perky waitress came over to them and handed each of them a menu. "Hello, what would you two like to drink?" she asked, her voice high-pitched and overlyenthusiastic. Flinching at the sound of the girls voice, Leon replied, "I'll have some water," and turned to Lilly to see what she wanted.

Lilly smiled at his offer, but the look in her eyes said that she wasn't going to take him up on it. She blinked again at how polite he was, opening the door for her when she was capable, but shrugged and stepped out, and then followed him inside. She sat across from him and looked up at the waitress, noting the perkiness and inwardly smiling at how joyous she was to work somewhere that relied heavily on the pleasantness of the customers. "Water," she answered softly.

"So." he said, looking at her from across the booth. "What do you enjoy in life?" he asked, curious as to how someone that had been through all that she had enjoyed life.
