The rain poured down hard, reminding Merle of England. The rain seemed darker there, as if it had a vendetta against the world. Here when the rain poured it did just that, pour, like someone way above the earth was pouring water into a straining just to watch it fall. He found it very unentertaining so he returned to people watching.
The coffee place, he hadn't bothered looking at the name as he walked in, was fast becoming full of people seeking shelter from the moisture outside. Merle's eyes jumped from face to face, trying to find someone to observe. There were wet faces, red faces, angry face, frustrated, happy, sad, neutral but nothing that particularly caught his eye. It was just another boring evening.

Emily stumbled into the Starbucks. She made quick of folding her umbrella before going to get something to drink. Finally she sat down near the windows and pulled out her laptop. She'd just gotten off her shirt at the store, and was heading home. She always stopped her everyday for coffee and to type a chapter or two of her story.

Merle's eyes snapped over to the door whe he spotted an umbrella closing. Finally, someone with some common sense. Most people had run in with papers over their heads, as if that would help. It'd been raining all day, they should have realized an umbrella was a bit of a neccissety. Looking away, Merle went to the counter and got another drink. He returned to his seat and studied the girl. He couldn't understand writing in such a public place.

Emily seemed unaware of her surroundings. She would sip her coffee every so often until her cup was empty, at which point she got up to get another. It was Friday after all...She didn't work until Sunday. She smiled and decided to splurge a little. Maybe I'll go get a burger for dinner?

Merle continued to watch her until he began to feel himself slip into boredom. Abandoning his windowside table he got up and walked over to where the girl was. "Can I ask what you're writing?" he questioned, voice not sounding the least bit curious.

"A book," she answered without looking up. Emily pressed save file on her computer and finally looked up at Merle. She waited for him to either ask another question or move on.

He raised an eyebrow at her, not very amused. "Really? You're writing....a...book? That was almost a helpful response. Care to be more specific?" he asked, somehow able to keep his voice from being rude.

Emily thought for a few moments before shaking her head. "Nah." She turned her attention once more and pulled up the internet. She tilted the screen towards him to show him her webpage. She had two series published, and there was an announcement saying 'new series!'

His eyes skimmed over the page quickly, mentally noting her name and other details he felt were important. "Interesting..." he said, though he didn't sound very interested at all. "So I'm to assure you are currently writing this new series? Very nice atempt to continue to be almost helpful."

Emily nodded in agreement and turned the internet off and went back to looking at her screen. She wasn't intending on being helpful. She sipped her coffee again with a contented grin on her face. "I like caffeine."

"Well I would hope so, otherwise you'd be in a very bad place." He took a sip of his own coffee and frowned when he realized it was getting cold. "I prefer warm caffeine to just caffeine in general."

"Me too," Emily agreed softly. She finished her coffee and stood. "I'm gonna get more," she said with a nod.

Merle looked down at his cup and thought about it, but decided to wait on the refill. "And I'll go back to my seat since apparently you're very hard at work and I shouldn't have dared to interupt you."

Emily didn't seem to hear him (or didn't care). She got her refill and returned to her seat, and once again, began clicking away. Emily wasn't much of a social person.

Merle stepped away but continued to watch her. It was rare that he met someone who seemed to be very much a loner. It was even more rare for that person to be female and for her to be unaffected by his dashing good looks. "Very interesting." he muttered quietly to himself as he got a refill and returned to his windowside seat. He made no effort to hide the fact that he was watching her.
